Sometimes I get clients who are "squirmers". Squirmers are people anticipating an unpleasant sensation when I get close to the area that has been giving them trouble. They are relaxed up until that point. If no discomfort is felt, they generally relax again. For those who actually feel discomfort, here are some suggestions that I make to help them relax.
- Feel the weight of your body sink into the table. Slow down your breathing and take deep breaths.
- Focus on your breath. Inhale when there is no pressure. Exhale when you receive pressure.
- Never hold your breath if you feel discomfort! Here is a breathing sequence that can help you when a tender area is touched. Immediately exhale and imagine you are breathing out the discomfort. Imagine you are breathing in healing energy and sending healing energy to that area by breathing out.
- Be in the moment. Leave the outside world and all the issues and problems you need to deal with on the back burner during your time. Allow yourself to wallow in the sensations of your massage.
