Many of us stand on our feet all day long and that is really not a good thing. Standing too long is not good for your circulation. What may happen is that fluid collects in your ankles and feet due to the force of gravity. How many times have you noticed puffy ankles after being on your feet too long? Your legs, ankles and feet might feel tired and may even hurt. Waste products have built up in those areas since your muscles are not getting an adequate supply of oxygen and nutrients. You may also notice that your skin is getting drier. Applying more lotion does not work as your skin just sucks it up. Your circulation is stagnant!
You already know that your body needs good circulation of blood for optimum heart and brain functioning. Tense muscles restrict the amount of blood and fluid flowing through them and place a strain on your heart. During massage your muscles are compressed to release the contracted muscles. This helps to move blood through the clogged areas and allow fresh blood, oxygen, and nutrients in to nourish those areas. Toxins and waste products are flushed out and can then be eliminated. So massage therapy is an excellent way to increase circulation.
Exercise is also highly recommended to increase your circulation. Aerobic exercise helps the oxygen in your blood to circulate. A minimum of 30 minutes of vigorous exercise three times a week will definitely work on improving your circulation. I remember early Saturday morning "Fire Legs" classes, at International Fit Dance in Richmond, VA. Led by the owner, Cynthia Thomas Rustin, this class was awesome! Legs, hips, and thighs got a complete workout. Although the class is not on the schedule currently, a Fire Leg DVD is available. You can either use it at home or take it to your gym if that is allowed. Whether you are an exercise newbie, intermediate or advanced, there is a class or DVD for you. Contact Cynthia at 804-497-7417 or fitdance@clearwire.com for more information.
Poor circulation is serious. Insufficient oxygen to your muscles and organs increases the likelihood of developing serious problems such as heart disease or stroke. The following symptoms may indicate a need for a visit to the doctor: tingling in your extremities, cold hands and feet, skin discoloration, or low energy levels. Get checked out if you need to and schedule that exercise class or massage when your doctor says its okay.
