Uncle Arthur is not one of our favorite relatives because he is a real nuisance! Since he's a Gemini, he tends to be a two-faced fellow. One face he shows is rheumatoid arthritis, an auto-immune disease, and the other face is osteoarthritis, which is degenerative joint disease. We hate to see him coming because he brings pain, stiffness, swelling, and inflammation to wreak havoc on our bones and cartilage. Over time our muscles tighten, trying to protect the bones while compensating for joint damage.
My Uncle Arthur likes to visit me late at night. He likes to reminisce about two car accidents I had where I was hit from the rear while living in Maryland. Sometimes he lets me sleep for a while and then wakes me up with a pain that feels like someone has stuck a knife in my back. As you know, he likes to show up, flare up, and hang out for a while. The ultimate unwanted guest!
The question then is what massage can do for you. You already know that massage relaxes muscles and relieves muscle tension, so pain reduction is possible. Your muscles are stretched as needed and become more relaxed. Your circulation improves. Less stress is placed on your joints. Your entire body benefits. So for those of you who dread another visit from Uncle Arthur and want to try something different, have a conversation with your doctor about making an appointment for massage today.
