My Favorite Villainess

Some of us love the bad girls. Who's your favorite? Cat Woman? Lady MacBeth? Cruella De Vil? The Wicked Witch of the West? I like all of the these and many more. However, my favorite villainess is the shoulder bag. Huh?
Did you know that an essential accessory - your pocketbook - may weigh more than the 1 or 2 pounds that doctors and chiropractors recommend? Remember that most women like to carry stuff - make-up, glasses, wallet, phone, charger, mail, lotion, umbrella, day planner, snacks, etc. A lot of items in your purse are there just in case of an emergency. If you are like me, your purse probably weighs at least 7 pounds easy. Go ahead and weigh your purse...I'll wait.

Surprised? Although you may feel you are carrying around just the essentials you need on a daily basis, all that stuff tends to add up. A couple of years ago The New York Times, CNN, and others reported that women who use bags with shoulder straps are carrying almost as much weight as mail carriers, leaving themselves open for injury. For those of you with school-age children, you may recall the uproar over heavy backpacks. Yet some of us have decided to substitute a backpack to carry more or larger items. You may have muscle strain and joint pain in the neck, shoulder and back if there is too much excess weight.
Sometimes I notice a client who has one shoulder higher than the other and get the response that that's the side the shoulder bag is carried on. Having one shoulder higher than the other may happen when your body tries to compensate for the heavy weight. What happens is your spine tilts at an angle and back discomfort and sometimes back spams may result. Now let's factor in the weight of your head, which is somewhere between 8 and 12 pounds. Our big heads need a lot of support, especially from the neck/shoulder area. Throw that heavy bag on your shoulder and those areas are probably going to tighten up.

Wow, I bet you never knew your shoulder bag could cause such trouble. Maybe after you read this you will empty your purse and see if you can lighten the load. However, if it's too late and you already suffer from neck, shoulder or back discomfort from that heavy shoulder bag, call me.

Re: My Favorite Villainess
I LOVE this article. I had had this discussion with several of my female clients at my private practice, and while some of them have agreed and began participating in their own recovery in conjunction with their specific treatment plan, some of them refuse to believe it and / or refuse to try to find alternatives to this issue. Thanks for a great post! -Corey

Re: My Favorite Villainess
You are welcome, Corey. Perhaps over time the reluctant ones will rethink their position. Thanks for the compliment.
