Look closely... that does not say "tuna". Tuina (tui na) is a Chinese term that roughly translates to push-pull. It is a modality that affects the flow of life energy, which is also known as Qi or Chi. The Chinese medical system views disease as an imbalance in the energy flow. Chinese philosophy speaks of the interaction of Yin and Yang, the two energies that affect everything. One energy cannot exist without the other. Balance is needed. Tuina follows this concept, and this modality is designed to restore balance in the body's energy for optimal health.
Typically the client remains fully clothed during the session. However, wearing loose garments is a good idea. No oils or creams are used. Tuina can be done on the massage table, floor, or even in a chair. Pressure is applied to meridians via points so that energy can flow freely. These meridians are not physical channels, but are actually energy pathways. Passive and active stretches are also done. Tuina uses an interesting technique called hand rolling. This is where the back of the hand rolls over the body and feels like a rolling pin. Pushing, pulling, kneading, tapping, etc. are just a few of the techniques used during treatment.
Categorized as a medical massage in China, Tuina techniques can be incorporated into relaxation massages. Pain relief, improved circulation, and increased flexibility are just a few of the benefits. However, if you are able to locate an experienced Tuina practitioner for a session, know that the techniques will be adjusted based on your individual issues in an attempt to restore balance to your body. It will not be your typical relaxation massage.
So if you are fishing for balance (sorry I could not resist), try Tuina.
