Chemical dependency is prevalent throughout our society. It is the use of a substance in a manner that is potentially harmful to the user and to anyone in contact with the user and may create problems in daily living. These substances may be legal, such as nicotine and alcohol, or may be illegal, such as cocaine and heroin.
People use these various substances to achieve specific effects, and symptoms vary according to the substance being used. In general, however, symptoms may include an inability to stop using the substance, unpleasant or dangerous symptoms if withdrawal is attempted, and a craving for the substance. Over time, higher doses of the substance may be needed to get the effect the user desires.
Is massage helpful for those with chemical dependency? Yes, massage can help ease withdrawal symptoms. Anyone in long-term recovery with no lasting contraindications is a good candidate for massage. If the person has other health problems, it is important to work with the doctor and/or treatment team to keep an eye on any health issues that may restrict massage.
Anyone using alcohol or illegal drugs at the time of a massage session should be rescheduled. Massage is inadvisable because of the risk of over-taxing the liver. Remember that chronic use of some of these substances may actually damage the liver while the liver is trying to filter harmful substances from the body.
So if you or a loved one is dealing with chemical dependency and wish to help detoxify and relax, check with your doctor, get the okay to proceed, and come in for a relaxing massage.
