Let It All Out

About a month ago I had a client who cried during and after massage. I immediately stopped what I was doing to see if the client was in physical distress and to ask if I needed to stop the session. My client asked for a tissue, said there was no pain, and wanted the massage to continue, saying she felt much better. Once the session was over, the client teared up again. She stated she was very surprised by the onset of tears.
Tissues were offered as I explained that sometimes people cry on the table. Their reactions range from silent crying to loud sobbing. Others may have a sad or happy feeling or memory and the tears will start to flow. That does not mean there is always an emotional element related to the crying. Some people cry from relief simply because their tension has been released. Did you know that stress hormones are released when you cry? That is the reason why you feel better afterwards.
So the release of tears helps to reduce stress and should not be a cause for embarrassment.
Tears and massage. It happens.

Re: Let It All Out
Very interesting post. My boyfriend recently gave me a massage after a very stressful week at work and in our relationship. And I just cried, almost like a baby -- I haven't cried like that in ages. It felt really good and gave me such a sense of calm. I wonder why that was? I wonder if we should get massages more often to relieve our built-up stresses?

I've never had this happen as a massage therapist. I've always wondered what I would do. Hard situation. www.bodyacheescape.com

Re: Let It All Out
Hi Michelle: I think that if you have awareness that it may happen that is the first step to being prepared. Sometimes it comes out of nowhere and other times you just know that your client has some issues that may leak out on the table. Tissues and kindness go a long way.
BTW, I love your site name and will check it out.
Thanks for your comment.
